FreshGrade has been a buzz word within the Educational field for a while now. Some wondering is it resourceful or not? Is Surrey going to make it mandatory for all teachers? Or what is FreshGrade? FreshGrade is a tool used to communicate student's learning with parents. It allows individual students to have a digital portfolio that captures their learning. Although it can be time consuming and it will make you feel like you are constantly carrying an IPad with you, I believe it makes learning much more organized. Organized in a sense that students and teachers do not have to worry about losing information because as soon as students complete work you can capture their learning in an instant and upload to FreshGrade.
In addition, the school I am currently teaching at in Surrey, BC has 100% of teacher participation meaning all teachers are on board with creating digital portfolios through utilizing FreshGrade as a tool to communicate learning. I think this is amazing!
FreshGrade makes learning much more meaningful. Students do not have to worry about letter grades or having grades to motivate them. Instead students take ownership and pride in their work that is being communicated home. I have an intermediate class that is fully capable of capturing images through IPad's and uploading to FreshGrade themselves. It doesn't always have to be the teacher capturing these moments. Also, parents are proud of these moments that are being sent home via to their cell phones, computers or laptops. It allows parents to see what their child is doing on a day to day or week by week basis.
A few neat moments about FreshGrade is realizing how hard your son or daughter has been working on a project and knowing they are preparing for an oral in-class presentation. The classroom teacher can video record this presentation and upload it to your child's account on FreshGrade. This allows mom or dad to view the presentation at the dinner table. The hard work your son or daughter has been working on can be captured onto their digital portfolio. Moreover, in physical education parents never get to witness the moments that take place. I currently have been working on a Basketball unit. Instead of just taking a picture of a child's self-assessed rubric of their bounce and chest pass. I can record them doing a bounce and chest pass and upload it to the student's profile. Now, mom and dad can view this child's digital portfolio through a cell phone, IPad, laptop or computer and understand the criteria and rubric much better. Because, not only do they get to view the summative piece, they get to witness the action!
I am only two month's into utilizing FreshGrade and am seeing so many benefits. The top of my list is loving the organization of the digital portfolio it allows you to set up for your students. Also, what a great tool it is for families to see their kids learning. We are moving to a digital age so why not keep up with the 21st century way of capturing student learning through digital portfolios?
I would love to hear your thoughts on Fresh Grade. I am still learning lots about it. If their is something interesting you would like to share with me. I would love to hear it!
