Practice Kindness Amazing Things Will Happen

An authentic life with flow, zest, and gratitude is meaningful, engaging and pleasant.  In order to want to optimize life we have to be willing to want to promote happiness into our lives.  However, becoming happier and maintaining happiness is not easy, it takes work (Peterson, 2006).  Optimism begins with a changing your attitude into expecting a desirable future.  An optimistic life for me leads into waking up every day, being excited and full of energy, otherwise known as zest.  Moreover, it opens a window of feeling gratitude for everything you have in your life and appreciating the meaningful moments of your life.  Below I will discuss my present and preferred future into optimizing the quality of my life.

My maximizing present involves continuing to give thanks through experiencing and expressing gratitude.  I will continue to be grateful for the individuals who are around me.  Gratitude is positive for both the recipient and the giver because the recipient is grateful for being the recipient of gratefulness and the giver is grateful for acknowledging the recipient was in need of, or worthy of benefit (Emmons, 2007).  Emmons (2007) suggest that those who regularly practice positive thinking reap emotional, interpersonal and personal benefits.  Therefore, I will continue to practice gratitude in my present life.

Furthermore, in my maximizing present I intend to continue to spread the wisdoms of “ARK” (Acts of Random Kindness).  I had the opportunity as project manager at Sunset Community Center every Monday for eight weeks of day-camp to teach the acronym “ARK” to an average of 40 new kids a week between the ages of 5-12 years old.  Also, I ran an “ARK” activity with some Vancouver City Day-Camp staff and discussed with them the power of ARK.  Every day for eight weeks before children and staff went home we  placed our hands all in the middle of the carpet piling on top of each other’s hands and yelled “Longevity” on the count of three. Completing these activities with the children and staff at my work has enhanced my work environment through building positive relationships with the kids and staff members. Before the work day begins my staff and I go around in a circle listing one thing we are grateful for and then move on with our days activities. Not only has this enhanced my work environment, but it has left an impact on my life in general.  I leave work in a mental and physical positive state which makes me feel less exhausted at the end of the day, because I am grateful for a positive work environment. ARK is very important to me because it creates a different type of subjective happiness when you are helping someone else in need. It allows you to feel selfless, and continue to help others in your daily life routines. It last much longer then a personal pleasurable experience, and creates feelings of hedonism (Peterson, 2006). Moreover, it includes feelings of meaning, engagement, pleasure and victory (Peterson, 2006).  This summer I have felt so much intrinsic motivation to wake up in the morning to go to work, and during my workday I have felt a flush of flow making a whole eight hour shift fly by. Therefore, in my maximizing present I would like to broaden and build on my positive emotions through gratitude, ARK and living a healthy and active lifestyle.

In addition, I will maximize my future through using the hope theory. My preferred future is to be happy.  I will be happy though having a successful career as a teacher and spreading ARK through my classroom. I need to broaden and build on many positive aspects of my life using hope theory. I hope to continue to have goals in my life and challenge myself by putting energy into my life and looking after myself through spreading positive emotions. I hope to have high subjective well-being and high life satisfaction in my career and relationships. In my life I hope to experience inner outcomes such as; enjoyment, savoring, remembering, pleasure and positive feelings (Peterson, 2006).  I do not have an end date of this time line of events because chromos otherwise known as time perspective is running out.  Life is short and changes in my life are going to begin today.  I will have to be very strict with myself and make sure I accomplish the goals I want while being happy and living everyday as if it were my last.

I would like to dedicate my first blog to a wonderful co-worker Monica Dhaliwal who helped in motivating me to create a blog and as she put it “make them live.” Thank you for savoring the gratitude exercises! I am happy I have inspired you to take ARK into your business career. Good-luck at Sauder.

Kindness, hope, intrinsic motivation, flow, joy, happiness... awesome.
Great post and what a way to share the importance of modeling what we want to see in our students and in society. Well said.

Dear, Ms. Bains
My reflections are that ARK is a great thing to do when someone is feeling sad or lonely, another thing is that I'm always happy in many ways unless someone does or says something to me THEN I get mad at that person. Anyways. like I said that I'm always happy no matter what even when something bad happens I forget that that had happened. When I hear great news I keep myself calm but not too excited and if there is bad news I still keep myself calm. Positivity is the great thing to have because if have negativity in you; you will have a bad day all day (mostly because you got fired, let's say, in your own job. This is an example).
P.S. This is my reflection of myself being positive in my time.
P.S.S. We are doing ARK in YWCA too.

Dear Ms Bains,
I consider myself a kind person. I try to always be there for my friends if they are sad or scared. If people are being unkind or mean I try to encourage them to look at the situation and work it through and be kind to everyone.
I have done ARK before as in helping a lady in a store when she dropped stuff and I picked it up for her or helping a young child at swimming who was scared to swim and I showed her how and helped her overcome her fear. I hope that I can always see the positive things in life and not the negative ones. This is something I try to practice daily.

Dear Ms.Bains,
I think that it is such a great idea to do ARK because (this is probably going to get dark so bear with me) what if someone was extremely depressed or suicidal because they thought that the world was filled with ignorant obnoxious people who are just crazy. Imagine if you see someone who is depressed and suicidal, if you said something nice, even if it was a small compliment, it could change their mind and it might even stop them from being depressed or suicidal. It's honestly crazy to think about the small things that could change someone's life. Say someone's parent is thinking about getting divorced, and you do something nice for them. What if that nice thing tipped the scales and made them realize something, maybe that person was going to get divorced before you came along and after, they realized why they shouldn't get divorced now imagine if that person went home and got divorced and the child ended up doing something illegal and in the future couldn't get a good job, thus leaving him poor and less fortunate. Now think about it this way, the parents never got divorced, the kid never did anything illegal, became a scientist and found the cure for cancer that could save a family member's life. It's absolutely amazing to think about the tiniest thing changing someone's life forever. I always love to be optimistic and think about the future, I think that it can benefit you mentally and physically. I really hope that everyone starts doing way more ARK's and make the world literally a better place.

Kyle, I am happy that you were able to reflect deeply through this blog. A small ARK can go a long way even if it is something as simple as smiling at someone you could change their whole day. I love that you are optimistic and it defiantly benefits you mentally and physically. I agree, it would be nice if everyone practiced ARK.

Hello Ms. Bains,
I find this blog inspiring, detailed, and well thought out. I can see you take time on your blogs. This blog shows a well detailed and inspiring outlook on what's happening with you, and creating positive life goals, joined with the project ARK. I find the project ARK really cool and inspiring, mainly because what you said it has done for you, your work place and friends. Also I can see a main part of this is happening because of you. I find this because, you have taken a positive outlook, and path for your life. I find you very inspiring, Ms. Bains.

To me ARK means helping someone out in a store or helping someone with their homework. ARK is important because without ARK everyone in the world will be mean to each other and no one will have friends or trust everyone. Thank you Ms Bains for showing us ARK. I believe it is very important!

I have read some of your blogs on the weekend sometimes. As I read you blogs they inspire me a lot. one more thing that I can tell is that you must spend a lot of time on you blogs. ARK (act of random kindness) I think is a cool thing like you tell people nice things to people. I think it means telling someone something nice about them and complementing them.

Hi, Mrs. Bains

I really like the concept of ARK because I think every one could use a nice complement. I remember once in my lunch monitor class a girl had accidentally hurt her friends feelings and that was her friends last day coming to the school so I comforted her with a comment and a joke and she was feeling better in the end:)

Dear Ms.Bains, I found this blog very inspiring that someone made such a well said and detailed blog on ARK. You can clearly see that you spent a lot of time thinking about this. It's crazy how a small act of kindness can change a person's entire outlook on life, or change how their lives turn out, by like what if someone is trying to commit and you change their minds and help them make their lives better. Finally, I think that doing ARK's as much as you can make you a better person mentally. Sincerely, Donghwa.

Dear Ms. Bains,
I think ARK is important and should be done all the time because it is very important to show kindness and give compliments. If this world did not have any kindness, there would be so many angry or aggravated people, it would not be good. I think to keep our world from not turning in to a world that is always at war, people should do ARK. To me, ARK is showing people that you care and that they are not alone if they are feeling like they are in a dark hole. I believe that people should show respect and kindness regardless if it is ARK week. People should show kindness every day. To me, ARK means giving compliments because you want to show the person you care about them and respect them.

Dear Ms Bains, This is my reflection on ARK

ARK is being kind. I think I am a kind kid I think..... ARK is being their for your friends, Im their for my BFFs 99.9% of the time. And spending a summer with kids instead of spending it at home as a break. To me ark means treat others how you want t be treated. So if you are kind to others others will be kind to you. Ark is important to you and to others. So if you do something nice it will make others feel good. And if you are mean it will hurt others feelings while you dont say sorry.

this is from Danai :)

Dear Ms.Bains.

"ARK" is A Random Kindness, "ARK" to me means when a person drops something or there pencil box hit`s the ground and opens you go and help or some one drops a purse and you pick it up for them. "ARK" is important because others like a person who`s nice for no reason and every one likes a nice person.

ARK is Acts of Random Kindness. It's something special to me because one complement can make my day. ARK means to me helping one another. For example, if someone is having a terrible day and thinking of quitting life, saying something kind to them can make them think that they're important and that they don't need to quit life. ARK means to me that everybody should be kind to one another because there isn't one thing that doesn't make them nice, or amazing. That's why ARK week is so important.

Dear Ms. Bains,
Just to start off I loved the blog! I completely agree with ARK, one smile can brighten anyone's day. ARK can come from anywhere, and anyone can do ARK. Not to brag but recently I donated to help the sick kids of B.C. from the telethon on the past weekend. But you can be kind in so many other ways. ARK is an amazing program and I feel that everyone should participate. Being kind can inspire and lift peoples spirit. You are awesome and I apreciate and am inspired by you! - Hannah :D

I think that it`s amazing that you really care about people`s feelings. I love that your letting us celebrate ARK! ARK stands for acts of random kindness. What I think it means is that you should spread kindness through out the places you love or even the places you hate. Kindness is something that can change your life forever, keep your job, keep a great place to be and best of all you`ll have more than a lot of friends you`ll have positive happy to be with you friends.

Dear Ms.Bains
I think ARK is a very cool thing and I can tell you do truly believe in what you are doing. To me ARK is a wonderful thing because it might just make a the day for someone. Say a kid is getting bullied and you stop him getting bullied that kid may have had a test that day and because you stopped the bullying he might do good on the test then do really good in the rest of school then after that he might become a scientist and stop a disease. A disease I hope this guy stops is the apocalypse from happening. Thank you for reading and that is what ARK is to me.

If we do continue doing ARK then the world could be a better place. SO if you see someone that needs the door opened then open the door, and if you see someone drop something then pick it up. its the little things that count!!

Dear, Ms.Bains
Ark is when you do something nice, kind or helpful for someone that may be sad or unhappy.
But not to say that doing ARK is just to boost unhappy or sad peoples emotional state, its also for making anybody`s day a
little bit brighter.
ARK to me is when somebody puts effort and emotion into being nice and kind. Like if you somebody struggling with
something you go help them, instead of thinking... wow that looks tough, I hope they are okay.
Ark is super important because when You show somebody kindness at random you show you care about them. Not only do the people who received the random act of kindness feel happy or appreciative but the person who`s giving the kindness is happy to.
I feel that random acts of kindness are very important in life.

Dear Ms. Bains
A random acts of kindness is a selfless act performed by a person or a group wishing to either assist or cheer up a individual person is to be kind, thoughtful, use your manners, give out complements, volunteer, and or forgive someone. ARK means to me when someone helps around person when there stuck, need help, or doesn't know what they were doing. ARK is important because everyone should help people when there stuck or don't know what there doing. > <

Dear Mrs.Bains
Acts of random kindness is when people help others like if some one is not understanding than someone would come over and help or if some one would come and help them up then they would ask them if their okay. To me Acts of random kindness means when other people help others if their hurt or stuck on something . Acts of random kindness is important because it would make other people want to be nice.
